Now that you have decided to get your first tattoo, we know that you can’t wait to get to a local tattoo shop! Before you run to the artist’s chair, check out our tips below for a few things you should consider.
Your Design
A tattoo should be meaningful. Be wary of choosing a design based on a fad or brand name – these things are only temporary, and your ink will become a permanent part of your skin. Take the time to think about what you really want, and, when you visit a tattoo shop, be sure to connect with an artist who will be open to help guide you into selecting the tattoo design of your choice. Take a look at artists’ work to see different designs. If you find a cool piece of artwork, or if you have an idea in mind, print, draw, or sketch the design and take it with you. Above all, take your time.
Where to Place the Tattoo
Where on your body would you like the tattoo design placed? This is also another important question, and you should definitely have some idea of this before going into the tattoo shop. If you’re just not sure, ask your artist about which areas are the most sensitive, especially if you have low tolerance for pain. Those who know they can’t take the heat should avoid the ribs, back of the knees, elbows, or the groin area.
Time of Year and Location
Exposure to sun and water can damage a new tattoo, so those of you in warm areas may want to avoid getting new ink in the summer, when you know you’ll be showing some skin. It’s much better to get a tattoo when you can let it heal properly, so you can show off a well-healed piece of artwork when things heat up.
Take a Test Drive
Prior to making a commitment to a tattoo, take it for a test drive. There are many artificial tattoos that you just wet and place on the skin (didn’t we all do this as kids?). A fake tattoo may seem a little strange, but it may help you to get accustomed to the idea of a permanent tattoo on your body.
Gather Opinions
Ask your family and friends what they think, especially if they also have tattoos. You will get mixed comments, but it can help to get a few different perspectives. Just remember, though, this is YOUR decision.
What to Expect
Don’t be afraid. Yes, there will be some discomfort, but once you make up your mind to get it done, you’re already past the hardest part. A good tattoo artist will guide you through the process, and, if you’re really freaked, bring a friend (just not an annoying one).
Before your artist starts on the tattoo, he or she will probably shave the area. If it’s a spot you usually shave, just remember you won’t be able to do so again until the tattoo is healed.
Choose Your Shop and Artist Carefully

After Care
Once your tattoo is done, it is your job to take care of it. The tattoo artist should give you some instructions – follow them! They are the experts. If you see any redness or itching/burning beyond the normal healing period, see a doctor. Remember, your tattoo is an open wound and can take 3-4 weeks to heal.
Touch Ups
Finally, don’t be afraid to go back for a touch-up. You’d much rather your artist be a little careful than messing up a line or\shading, and, if you’ve built a good relationship with the artist, this should be no problem.
