The City of Brotherly Love, famous for its arts and culture, is also famous for being a tattoo-loving city. And this week, the spotlight is on Philly with the converging of Valentines Day with the biggest & baddest tattoo convention right here in town. As you can imagine, it’s not an easy task to find a quality tattoo shop in Philly, which is the 6th largest metropolitan city in the country, with over 50 tattoo shops just within the city limits. With new shops popping up left and right and so many great shops in the ‘burbs, we really had to do our homework to bring to you the highest rated and highest reviewed tattoo shops in town.
In a city that has the most outdoor art in the country, it’s no surprise that one would find as many world class tattoo artists in each shop.

2. Art Machine Productions
Located on the up-and-coming arts corridor at 1345 Frankford Ave., Art Machine Productions is certainly a name to remember. Owner and Artist Tim Pangburn established this amazing tattoo shop in 2010 after 13 years of tattooing. Art Machine Productions is now the host of an amazing family of award winning artists, such as Nick “The Tailor”, Evan Lovett, Billy Weigler, Ryan Szadyr, Andy Robinson, and Bobby Lockhart. The shop is consistently rated one of the top in the city by various publications and media. Its not a surprise, since this crew have a wide range of styles, from new school to traditional, and can really tattoo just about anything on anyone who walks into the shop. The shop is open 6 days a week; you can make an appointment or walk in.
3. Big City Tattoo Studio and Piercings
Big City Tattoo Studio and Piercings is Located in Brewerytown at 2635 W. Girard Ave. Owner Leena has created a professional atmosphere from the moment you walk in and has an amazing staff of artists. Its also refreshing to see a shop that advocates volunteering and giving back to their community in a big way. Big City Tattoo is open Mon-Sat.
4. Northern Liberty Tattoo
Located at 823 N. Second St., you can expect nothing but the best clean, solid work from these well-experienced guys. Kyle Fitzpatrick, Salvatore Ffiti, Dwayne Moore, Todd Lowell, Big Jaz, NENE, Myke Chambers, Jay Freestyle, and Kirk Alley pride themselves on being featured as some of the best artists in the city. The artists are also known for being friendly and open to helping you design exactly what you want. They have certainly proved themselves in the Philly tattoo scene. They are open 7 days a week.
5. Tattoo Odyssey Inc.
Located at 8012 Castor Ave. and in business for more than 24 years, Tattoo Odyssey Inc. is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2pm – 9pm and Saturdays from 1pm to 6pm. Tattoo Odyssey features award-winning custom designs. Walk-ins and appointments are both welcome.
6. Skin Deep Tattoo and Piercings
Located at 823 N. Second Street, Skin Deep Tattoo and Piercings brings award-winning artists from NJ to Philly, offering many designs and custom works. Their artists offer combined experience of over 30 years. They are open 7 days a week, but Sundays are by appointment only.

Black Vulture Gallery, located in Fishtown at 208 Girard Ave., boasts some of the best artists and amazing custom work by Hoode, Bird Reynolds, Rachael Shelly, Shlak, Chad Knight, Sean Rhodes, and Josh Hoffman. 8. Deep Six Tattoo
Located at 2483 Grant Ave., Deep Six Tattoo was established in 2006 by owner and artist Paul Acker and his team of award winning artists. Deep Six is definitely one of the best premier custom tattoo shops in Philly. These guys have certainly found their niche in the tattoo scene, and, looking at their work, there is no question as to why this is a top shop in the city. They are open 6 days a week, appointments preferred, and a must for Paul.
9. Moo Tattoo
Located at 513 South St., Moo Tattoo specializes in custom designs and are cover-up experts. Owner and artist Noah and artist Johnny are both highly rated and have been creating custom tattoos for a long time. They are open 7 days a week, with appointments and walk-ins welcome.
10. No Ka Oi Tiki Tattoo:
Located on 610 S. 4th St., No Ka Oi Tiki Tattoo opened in 2002, and owner/artist Anna Paige and her colleagues have indeed created a fun and inviting tattoo and piercing island oasis. In addition to their house artists, No Ka Oi Tiki features a number of frequent guests. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are recommended.
